I suppose the question about whether or not hard core gamers have any life outside of the gaming world, is up to debate. The answer, really depends on who you ask, and what your definition of a “life” is. I’ve been a rabid fan of gaming, ever since I played my first computer video games on a Radio Shack TRS-80 (commonly referred to as a Trash-80) back in the seventies. It was backgammon. Yes, I am really that old. I like to think my gaming life has evolved somewhat since then, even though I’ve had periods of my life where other events distracted me from the wonderful world of games. There was the whole college and get a job phase, which I somehow managed to struggle through. Then there was that getting married and having kids phase, that at the moment shows no end in sight, but I would say is somewhat more balanced. Meaning, that I do have more time to play games, since changing diapers and night time feedings are a thing of the past. As a matter of fact, these days my kids are often better gamers than I am. Although I do remember the first time my oldest girl kicked my butt in Unreal Tournament. I think she was about the tender age of 11. Some what humiliating, but it also made me a proud gamer dad at the same time. 
She didn’t even have to use any video game cheats to do it. Good girl! So, as you can see I did have a social life and manage to play far too many video games. As life progressed, I even found ways to incorporate computer games into my real life. I think it’s ultimately important for gamers to have a social life, and online dating for gamers is a good way to do that. It’s not something that was available for me when I started, and that’s kind of unfortunate. These days there are so many different options for games, that it’s easier to allow them to consume your life. Games on your cell phones, gaming consoles, and games on your laptop. It’s important to have a real life outside of games as well. After all, if it wasn’t for real life, where would all the good ideas for games come from.

How I Get My Kids Away From The Television

All my kids talk about getting every year for Christmas is video games if they don’t go downstairs and find Gears of War 2 under our new flocked christmas tree I do not know how they will survive. It makes me a little nuts since I do all I can to get my kids outdoors. I would much rather give them a pair of new skates or golf clubs then some mind numbing thing that will enchant them in front of the television. Oh well I guess you just learn that kids are kids. Fighting with them is just too much work.
After saying that I guess I should get to the point that I’ve developed a few ways to control their television addiction. I do a couple of things in an effort to force them outside. First off I limit their time every day to one hour (they can earn more). I have discovered that limiting the time is key to everything else because then they know time above and beyond that is to be earned. To be more fair I’ve allowed them some methods of earning more television time. That leads me into my second trick. They can get more television time by either doing chores or spending time outside. I like the chores option because it is nice for me to have a few less things to do, and the reward for them isn’t bad either. I set it up so it ends with one hour of chores earning one hour of television time.
The number two way they get more television time is by spending some of their time outside. When they go outside and play nice I allow them 15 minutes of gaming to every hour of outside time. Like I say this isn’t a huge payoff, but I also don’t really think asking them to be outside is a huge thing to ask. That option works the best of their long Saturdays where they spend the majority of the day outside anyway. They spend all day outside on Saturdays and earn themselves a couple of hours in front of the television. Realistically a night of playing games and watching movies isn’t so bad after a full day outside.
That being said I’m ok with one or two ending up under flocked christmas tree this year if it has the effect of getting my brats outside and getting some stuff done around the house for me. I hope they like their games, because I am going to like my “gift” of a little more control around the house.
