dick_tracey_watchUsually being the first product into any market gives the manufacturer or inventor a huge advantage over the competition.  But, as this story unfolds, you will find that that is not necessarily the case.  I think everyone that reads this blog, or knows anything at all about the current state of computer would agree that this is a bit of a gaming Renaissance.  I do believe that future generations will refer to this time period as the golden age of gaming.  As amazing as the seventies and eighties were for the birth of computer games, I do believe that the times we live in today are even more special if your somehow associated with computer games.  I mean, games are on just about every imaginable device and gadget sold these days.

And, there is no shortage of gadgets around to be sure.  There are of course the cellphone, the smartphone, the mp3 player, digital cameras, gps devices, handheld gaming devices, console gaming devices, traditional desktop computers, regular laptop computers, and the next new hybrid, the netbook computers.  I’m sure, I may have missed a few, but the one thing all these devices have in common, is that you can play games on them.  OK, the digital cameras are a bit of a stretch, but if you look at some of the photo editing software included with some, they could pass off as games.  My daughter downloaded a “game” app for her iPod touch the other day, that was really just a drawing program.  There’s not really a huge leap between drawing programs and photo editing software in my mind.

But, I digress a little bit here.  The point that I’m slowly getting around to making, is that somehow wrist watch manufacturers missed getting on the wrist watch as a gaming platform boat.  Now, how did that happen?  I mean wrist watches have been around for way longer than any of the gadgets listed above.  They should have been an obvious choice from day one.  Dick Tracy was even dropping hints in the seventies or eighties, that a wristwatch could be used for other purposes.  It was the Skype and MSN messenger of it’s day.  I think, any old copy of timepiece would be the perfect place to play a few games.  With the miniaturization of computer games and watches, you don’t need to make a watch big and bulky to play games on.  An elegant Breitling replica or Emergency Mission replica would be perfect for the task.

I know several people that often don’t wear watches, because their cellphone tells them the time.  That seems a shape, and a bit unfair as the wristwatch was here way before the cellphone.  Not to mention, that watches look way nicer on your wrist then that tacky old BlackBerry hanging from a case on your belt.  I mean, what kind of fashion statement is that anyway.  I do believe, it’s time that wrist watches took their rightful place in the world of gaming these days.
