diceDice are one of those things that you never really think about buying until you need them. Then you wished you had some. Enter colored blank dice. Useful for a wide range of applications, colored blank dice are exactly what they sound like – dice that have nothing on the faces. Produced in a wide range of colors, blank dice are something that every game designer should not be without. They have so many uses, once you have them, you will find yourself coming up with new ways to use them. Why? Dice are fun!

When you start looking around to buy some colored blank dice, you may be a little confused by many things. First up is the size. Dice typically come in 5/8 inch (16mm), 7/8 inch (19mm) or 1 inch (25mm) sizes. The most common kind of colored blank dice are the 5/8 inch size in typical colors (red, blue, green, yellow, black, etc.). Translucent dice in this size can be found, but they are usually red. 7/8 inch colored blank dice can be difficult to find. Large sizes (25 mm or 1 inch) can be found blank but are usually white.

Another common option is indented specialty blank dice. With these, central part of the dice is slightly lower, allowing the sticker to sit lower than the edges. Stickers will often last longer on these, a plus for teachers and game makers.

So other than replacing a lost dice for your board game, what are colored blank dice good for? Custom game makers use them for both board games and dice games. Educators use them for language games (how many words with the letter…, start a story with the letter…). A dry erase marker could be good instead of a sticker in these situations. Some people build 3D puzzles out of them (think of Tetris). The possibilities are endless.

Dice are an ancient source of fun. Once you start thinking about all the things you can do with colored blank dice, it will be hard to not pick up a pair (or set) for yourself.
