I’m Feeling The Need For Speed
Filed Under Racing Games | 1 Comment
Ever since Tom Cruise those fateful words in Top Gun, they’ve become a common component of our cultural vernacular to this day. And not just because it was a catchy and cool thing to say, but because in reality every once in a while we all feel the need for speed. I know I do, and I’m not exactly the biggest speed junkie in the room. I mean c’mon, I own a sailboat for crying out loud. But, sometimes I really need that illusion of speed. The feeling of living a little bit dangerously. And, what better way to do that, then in the guise of a video racing game. Car games, bike games, truck games, motorcycle games, boating games, and jet games, are just a few of the racing games that I enjoy.
My favorite games are usually in the space genre, so if I can get a racing game set around different planets, or out in space, then I’m in my glory. I really liked the Star Wars Episode Racers game for a long time. Even enough to go and buy a game joy pad to get the best action out of the game. You can play it with the keyboard, but the results just aren’t quite the same. The keyboard is just not responsive enough.
These days, as technology advances and games ported to every imaginable platform under the sun, I can get my gaming fix, just by visiting a few arcade sites online. There are quite literally hundreds of free games to be played online at different websites. You don’t have to download any software, as they just play in your browser. It’s something we so take for granted these days. I remember when I was a kid growing up, and having to go to the local arcade with a pocketful of quarters to get my gaming fix. As nice as computer gaming is these days, video arcades were kinda cooler. You could hang out with your buddies, and socialize more while playing games.
Not that I’d ever want to go back to those times
There’s just too much gaming goodness everywhere you turn these days. And ,there are still a few video gaming arcades around. Our local big move theatre has a bunch o upscale games to play. They offer something a little different then the regular home gaming experience. Usually bigger screens, and real bikes or cars to sit in, surrounded by big honkin’ speakers. Today is really a great day to be a gamer.

I always said, that the real reason God invented computer computers, was to play video games. And I stand by that assertion. At least in my world, that’s the way things work, and maybe it does in yours as well. Computer games have really moved mainstream a few years ago. Have you ever seen how surgeons work these days. The more intense surgical procedures are practically like computer games these days. Doctors watch video screens, as they manipulate tiny robotic devices to do work that used to be done by the hand of a surgeon only a few years ago. How about the industry of design and construction. All those simulated virtual computer programs, that allow them to visually move walls, furniture and floors around a home look like a level designer for Unreal Tournament or Quake to me. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s were they came from. And the list of simulators used for strategic decision making is really pretty endless these days. Military commanders use it, project managers use it, and even farmers use it. It really is true I think, that sometimes the world is just one big computer game. I love it.
