girl_gamersMy original computer game playing days go back quite a ways.  Quite a ways back, and longer than I care to admit to.  Gaming certainly has changed quite a bit over the years, and it certainly is a great time to be a gamer.  What with mobile gaming, console gaming, handheld games, and of course the ever popular and reliable computer games.  The quality of games certainly has increased over the years in a lot of areas.  Graphics is probably the first one that comes to mind.  I’m always a sucker for some great eye candy in my games.  When I think of the deplorable pixelated graphics of the early games I don’t know how I could stand looking at them for so long.  As I think about it though, I was more than will to play games that had no graphics whatsoever.  I spent hours playing text based games like Zork.  That just goes to show you that great games don’t rely purely on graphics.  Text based games of old relied quite a bit on story and plot to enthrall the player.  Story telling, is of course another are where games have increased immensely over the years.  It’s also nice to be able to play games on a lot of different platforms.  Lots of games now cross the gap from PCs to MACs to consoles to cellphones.

But, one of the most remarkable enhancements made in the world of games, is the types of games being created.  And, who those games are being made for.  No longer do we live in the days of games made by boys and for boys.  There are now hundreds and thousands of games for girls on the market.  And why wouldn’t there be.  They make up more than half of the population, so it was inevitable, that game makers would smarten up, and start making girl games one day.  And it couldn’t have come any sooner for me.  I have three daughters that are all of the age where computer games are great fun.  Now, even though they cut their teeth on what many would consider guy games (Unreal Tournament) and others, they eventually found their way to what would be considered more girly games.  The first one they really got hooked on was The Sims.  Now there was a game that broke down a lot of barriers.  Not just for girls, but for gamers in general.  The Sims basically created a new genre of games, where the game was really just a toy.  There was no winning, no losing, just playing.

As The Sims and others began attracting more gamers of the fairer sex, it became obvious that there was a lot of potential here.  This has had a cumulative effect on the gaming industry as a whole.  Once more girls started playing games, then obviously more girls started making games.  Which has of course had the rather predictable effect of there being more girl games being produced and sold everyday.  Isn’t it great to be involved in gaming in this day and age?
